Chapter 10

Having a face to face with Roland was a rare occurrence but not unheard of. In their seven-year partnership, Dillon had sat down with Roland twice, and both times had been enough to make him realize the man had probably saved his life. The first time he’d asked for a job in Roland’s escort service, and the second time they talked about a client who turned into a stalker. Both times Dillon had been anxious, but not near as nervous as he was now.

Roland was thick and dark with a build which warned of his strength. What his size hid was how fast he was, and how furious he became when his business was threatened. He fronted as an insurance agency. He actually did sell insurance, but his investment clients, as they were referred to, were the bulk of his business and the core around which he’d built his elite customer base.

That was how he and Dillon met.

One of Roland’s escorts, Jeremy, found Dillon behind his condo propped up against a dumpster. Dillon was dressed only in his boxers and completely oblivious as to where he was or how he got there. It was the second time in his life he’d been found behind a dumpster.

At first, Jeremy thought Dillon was dead and had freaked out, screaming until Dillon groaned. Once he realized Dillon was still alive, Jeremy called Roland and brought Dillon to his condo, handing him a pair of sweats and a cup of coffee while they waited.

Roland arrived within the hour looking for answers. A few weeks prior, one of his other escorts ended up in the same predicament and Roland had put the word out. He expected his boys to report anything similar or suspicious. Nobody messed with his business and he wanted payback.

At first, Dillon thought that he was just another pimp protecting his interests. He’d seen plenty of them in three years on the street and had been approached by several. But watching Roland calm the still flustered Jeremy, and witnessing his attentiveness firsthand, gave Dillon a different picture of the man. Later, he learned that none of Roland’s escorts walked the streets.

Roland had an elite client list whose needs were discretely catered to for large sums of money. Fuck boys, drama queens, meth heads never made it anywhere near Roland’s clients.

After the incident, Dillon and Jeremy became friends and through that friendship, a professional relationship developed with Roland. Dillon didn’t realize it then, but Roland started checking into him and had Jeremy keeping tabs. Some months later, when Jeremy suggested that maybe Dillon might want to contact Roland and get out of street hustling, it had been at Roland’s prompting.

The escort service was a dream for Dillon. Since Roland’s escorts were listed as insurance salesmen, they pulled a paycheck, paid taxes, and never handled cash. Roland managed everything behind the scenes before the service was even brokered. Any tips they made were theirs to keep, and Roland would often slide them a bonus when a client made an exceptional comment.
